Mustafa Kemal Atatürk
Mustafa Kemal Atatürk regarded education as a fundamental pillar of modernization and progress, and articulated a vision that supported scientific thinking, the arts, and sports. This perspective aligns with Robert College’s long-standing educational tradition. Within the history of Robert College, there are notable individuals who were directly connected to Atatürk and who left lasting contributions to Türkiye’s cultural, artistic, and athletic life.
Vahram Çerçiyan, who served as a mathematics, geography, and calligraphy teacher at Robert College, designed Mustafa Kemal Atatürk’s signature. This signature remains the most widely recognized and commonly used representation of Atatürk’s signature today and holds historical significance. Halet Çambel, a graduate of Robert College, participated in the 1936 Berlin Olympic Games in the discipline of fencing at Atatürk’s request and became the first woman to represent Türkiye at the Olympic Games. These examples reflect key points where Atatürk’s emphasis on education, arts, and sports intersected with the history of Robert College.
