On December 4, 2024, we hosted a mini exhibition highlighting the artistic journey of this year’s recipient of the Özlem Akçakuş RC 97 Art Scholarship, Derin. The scholarship, established by the Class of 1997 in memory of their beloved classmate, continues to celebrate Özlem's influence by supporting young artists in pursuing their dreams.
This year’s recipient, Derin, explored embroidery as a unique artistic medium, creating deeply personal works that reflect her growth and creative journey. What made her art stand out was the inspiration she drew from her family’s cultural and social inheritance. Influenced by her grandmother, Derin used materials that were once owned by her grandmother and mother, bridging the past with her own time and the world she encounters in her daily life on the streets.
Reflecting on her artistic journey, Beril shared how Robert College played a pivotal role in shaping her path, saying, “I wasn’t born as an artist; I grew into one at Robert College.”
Derin’s artwork is now on display in the hallway of Gould, where it can be appreciated by the entire Robert College community. Congratulations to Derin for her achievement, and a heartfelt thank you to the Class of 97 for ensuring that Özlem Akçakuş’s influence continues.
