After his much-lauded novels such as Körburun and Atmaca, Hikmet Hükümenoğlu greets his readers with a historical romp, Harika Bir Hayat (A Wonderful Life, Can Yayınları). The novel is structured as a biography of a woman named Harika. The format allows Hükümenoğlu to bring to life many historical events, as well as famous persona during the first years of the burgeoning Republic.
The novel is full of multi-dimensional, strong female characters and also displays an interesting mother-daughter dynamic. The ending makes the reader hope that there will be a sequel, a possibility with which Hükümenoğlu concurs: “I wrote the ending, thinking that I would continue the story. I roughly know which decade it will take place in but do not know much else yet.”
