Nurettin Sabuncu passed away on March 2, 2023, in Istanbul. Born in Mersin, Sabuncu came to Robert College in 1943 and graduated with a bachelor’s in civil engineering. He earned several sporting honors at RC. In 1959 he graduated from Syracuse University with a master’s in civil engineering.
Nurettin returned to Turkey where he worked as a project engineer on the Hirfanlı dam and as head of the construction division of the State Highway Department. He moved back to the US and in 1972 started his own company, Nory Construction. He was the President of the Assembly of Turkish American Associations from 1995-97 and a board member.
Sports was always an important part of his life, and over the years he owned a North American soccer team, competed as a power boat racer and started the Special Olympics in Turkey.
He is survived by his wife Lia and his daughter Ajda.
