Ginny Maxwell served on the Robert College Board of Trustees for 28 years.
Virginia “Ginny” Dorr Maxwell passed away peacefully on March 31, 2023, in Sleepy Hollow, NY. She was 85 years old.
The daughter of Russell Dorr and granddaughter of Goldwaithe Dorr, both long-time RC Trustees, Ginny represented the third generation in her family to serve Robert College, for 27 years, promoting educational excellence in Turkey.
Ginny moved to Turkey in 1948 when her father was appointed Director of the Marshall Plan. She got to know Turkey well, often traveling with her parents during her family’s three-year stay.
In 1957 she received her degree in art from Bennett Junior College in New York. After friends and family, art was Ginny’s love. She was an accomplished artist who painted mainly in watercolor, drawing inspiration from landscapes of the many places she had visited around the world. Much of her work was exhibited in local art shows around New York including her beloved Point O’ Woods, where many of her pieces are cherished in private collections.
In the mid 1950s, Ginny joined the board of the Dorr Foundation, a family-directed non-profit organization started in 1950 by her great-uncle John Van Nostrand Dorr and served as an active member for 43 years. The Foundation supports science and environmental education, for students in grades 6-12.
Ginny is survived by her husband, Charles Maxwell, her four children, Christiane Wyckoff (Kurt), Ginna Sesler (Doug), Russell Wiese (Megan), and Peter Wiese (Deb), three stepsons, Bruce, Stephen, and Brandon Maxwell, and ten grandchildren, Spencer (Dylan), Carden, Virginia (Brandon) Wyckoff, Russell and Julia Sesler, Bryson, Owen, and Arden Wiese, and Hannah and Mason Wiese, and her brother, Goldthwaite H. Dorr.
